Creatine monohydrate
Creatine has become the reference compound for power improvement, with the following results from one meta-analysis (i.e., an analysis that combines the results of multiple scientific studies): “Able to increase a 12% improvement in strength to 20% and able to increase a 12% increase in power to 26% following a training regimen using creatine monohydrate.”
Ashwagandha
Multiple randomized controlled trials have shown a statisically significant increase in strength and power output from ashwagandha extract supplementation. One of the studies showed more than a 40-pound increase and more than a 10-pound increase in the one-re-max (1RM) for bench press and leg extension, respectively. Muscle size, serum testosterone, and muscle recovery as measured by plasma creatine kinase were also improved versus placebo.
Caffeine anhydrous
Numerous double-blind studies have shown a reliable and significant increase in power output, up to 8%, from caffeine supplementation.
L-leucine
In a double-blind study, leucine increased power output from 31.0% to 40.8%.
Alpha GPC
A double-blind study showed that Alpha-glycerophosphocholine (Alpha GPC) taken 45 minutes prior to exercise yielded a 14% improved power output.
Evidence suggests that alpha-GPC exerts its effects by increasing the synthesis and release of acetylcholine in the brain, where it is involved in memory, motivation, arousal, and attention.
Acetylcholine is also responsible for stimulating muscles to contract. Therefore, it’s theorized that increased acetylcholine levels lead to a stronger signal for muscle contraction and, consequently, increased force production.
